I've heard about early download times. It must have been very frustrating. When I got the internet, in 2004, I didn't have that problem—but, like you, I made a beeline for the fan fiction! Some on small personal sites, some as it was posted to the mailing list, but mostly on Mel's site a/k/a the big archive. (Long, long before AO3.)
